The fight against the clock on the 18th stage at the 17 k long uphill time trial. The TT started with a 4k flat section, but then was followed from a 10,5k uphill section before the last 2,5 k downhill to the finish in Megève.
No good news from Shane Archbold.
After his crash yesterday in a downhill with over 80km/h, he still was able to finish the stage but later examinations in the evening confirmed a broken pelivs. The fracture is stable, but Shane had to retire from the Tour de France today. BORA – ARGON 18 will now take on the last stages with 8 riders.
Sam Bennett from BORA – ARGON 18 opened today again the ITT at 10.51pm because of his last place in the GC.
The victory of the today’s ITT was again a battle between Tom Dumoulin and Chris Froome. At the first intermediate time after 6,5 k, Dumoulin was 9 seconds behind R. Porte and 14 seconds ahead of Chris Froome. Froome could reduce the gap and was finally 21 seconds faster than Dumoulin at the finish.
Jan Barta the time trial specialist from BORA – ARGON 18 was at the first intermediate time in 23th place. Finally, he lost 3 positions and finished in 26th position with a gap of +2’15’’. The course today suited him not 100% because of the steep sections on the climb and the relative short length.
Emanuel Buchmann showed again his climbing skills and finished the TT in a respectable 42nd place. In the GC he catches up one place and is now in 21th position. Now all eyes are on the last two mountain stages where Emu still can jump into the top 20.
“Today it was ok for me, I gave it not everything, only 90%, and could save some energy for the next 2 days. I heard that the last few corners were not easy, so I did not take any risk. It was a really difficult uphill time trial, not rhythmical and very steep ramps. I`m not far away of the first 20 riders in the GC, so I will give everything in the next 2 days to gain some positions. Although I’m already tired after 18 stages, but I think everyone here is tired. In the morning we talked shortly that I will start with the TT bike, but I think it was the best decision to take the normal race bike with aero handle bars.” – Emanuel Buchmann
