To coincide with the start of this year’s season, the editors of MOTORRAD, Europe’s largest motorbike magazine, have tackled the issue of motorbike security. Together with a professional partner, the editors have tested a total of 26 motorbike locks for handling, transport and safety (a sophisticated attempt to break the lock and a crude attempt).
In this test, which included brake disc locks, U-locks, chain locks and armored cable locks, ABUS products were once rated as satisfactory and four times as good and very good. The GRANIT X Plus Detecto 8077 won ‘best in test’ and the GRANIT X Plus 1025 ‘best buy’.
The GRANIT X Plus Detecto 8077 alarm brake disc lock impressed in the Handling category with its compact size and practical travel bag. In the Security category, the 8077 convinced the editors with its high-security X Plus cylinder, “ultra-strong steel body”, “generously sized locking pin” and “low theft risk”.
The Steel-O-Flex GRANIT X Plus 1025 impressed with its versatility and small pack size – and “very acceptable security”. In tests, it withstood bolt cutters, hammer blows and saw attacks and was awarded “Top theft prevention for on the move”.
Besides the two outstanding products, Victory 68 Roll-Up and Sledg 77 were also awarded an “Very good” rating. GRANIT X Plus 540, IVY 9100 and GRANIT X Plus Detecto 8077 + 12KS/120 are rated as “Good” in the test.
Statistics from the Association of German Insurers show that motorbike theft should not be underestimated. Every year, around 33,000 bikes are stolen in Germany alone. Of these thefts, only 20 per cent are resolved. The MOTORRAD magazine editors conclude therefore: “Better to spend a few more euros than to end up without a motorbike. Cheap locks make tempting impulse buys but are a waste of money, as they are easy pickings for thieves.”
