La Vuelta 2017

The 72nd Vuelta a España starts on 19 August and is the third and therefore last of cycling’s ‘grand tours’ to take place in 2017. It all starts with a team time trial – this time in Nîmes in the south of France. After 21 stages, the grand tour will then end on 10 September, as is customary, in the nation’s capital Madrid.
‘La Vuelta’ will cover a total of 3298 kilometres across Spain, home to the Movistar Team. In addition to the opening time trial, the riders will be taking on five flat stages, eight undulating stages and six mountain stages, as well as a 42-kilometre individual time trial, so the battle for the red jersey, worn by the overall leader, is sure to be extremely exciting.

Overall classification

While for those riders competing for the overall classification the time trials are primarily about minimising time losses, the high mountains provide the sternest test – the mountain finishes on Calar Alto and in the Sierra Nevada in particular ensure no mercy is shown to the favourites as they battle for spectacular stage victories and the coveted overall classification.

At the latest, by the time the 20th and penultimate stage, finishing on Alto de l' Angliru, is complete, the overall winner should have an unassailable lead.

Movistar Team

In July, 12 riders were named in the initial selection, nine of whom will go on to represent the Spanish Movistar Team:

Winner Anacona, Jorge Arcas, Carlos Betancur, Richard Carapaz, Rubén Fernández, Gorka Izagirre, Daniel Moreno, Nélson Oliveira, Antonio Pedrero, Dayer Quintana, José Joaquín Rojas, Marc Soler
