After the 2nd rest day, followed the 17th stage. The next mountain stage with a mountain top finish after 184,5 k in Finhaut – Emosson.
At the beginning many riders tried to attack, but the GC teams set a hard pace on the font of the peloton to stay in control. So in the first hour the riders completed 51,7k. But when the first climb started, a group of 14 riders could escape and had later a gap of 11 minutes.

Shane Archbold from BORA – ARGON 18 had bad luck and a big crash on the downhill from the second KOM. He hit the ground when descending at a speed of about 80km/h.

Shane could not explain what happend, but after first check from the tour doctor, he got on his bike again and was able to finish the stage in the grupetto. He really suffered a lot. At the moment further examinations are done, but besides losing a lot of skin there is no indication of a serious injury at the moment.
Meanwhile the leading group worked well together and had still a 11 minutes lead over the peloton with 45k to go. The average speed at this time was 46,7 km/h. On the decent before the last climb first R. Majka and J. Pantano attacked. But on the way to the mountain top finish Ilnur Zakarin (Kathusa) overtook both and won his first ever Tour de France stage.
Emanuel Buchmann from BORA – ARGON 18 couldn’t follow the group of favourites on the penultimate climb, the Col Forclaz. Still he rode a strong race and was able to maintain his rhythm also on the final climb. The climber of BORA – ARGON 18 reached today the finish with a gap of 7 minutes to the yellow jersey, in the 34th place. So he will start tomorrow's time trial sitting in 22th spot in the GC. Also on the young rider classification is now just about 3 minutes off a podium finish.
“Today I didn’t manage to go in the break which was my goal for today. In the end it was ok for me because I was in the group with all the favourites till the penultimate climb. In the last climb to the finish I was in a small group and so I was able to ride my own speed. In a long and hard race like the Tour it is better to stay in your limit rather than push too much and then crack completely. It is very difficult for me to go for a stage win now. After the ITT I will try to go in the break again. The last mountain stage will be very hard because all favourites will go full gas.” – Emanuel Buchman
