Emanuel Buchmann in 3rd place in the GC for young riders

20th stage offered the last chance for the climbers to win a stage. The route today was like yesterday with four climbs from Megève to Morzine over 146,5k. For Emanuel Buchmann from BORA – ARGON 18 the last chance to improve some time to get in the TOP 20 in the GC.
Not only was the terrain similar to yesterday, also the racing situation. Immediately after the official start, five riders escaped, after a short time another 10 riders could close the gap. On the top of the first hill 37 riders were in front with one minute. From BORA – ARGON 18 it was the young Austrian Patrick Konrad how was in this leading group. This group was able to increase the lead to over 5 minutes. In the descent of the second climb, eight riders were in front of the leading group and hold constantly a gap of one minute. The high speed was the reason that a few riders couldn’t follow the group. So on the last climb only Pantano (IAM) and Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick Step) were in front, followed by nine riders with Nibali (Astana) and four minutes behind the peloton with Froome, Mollema, Quintana and the two riders from BORA – ARGON 18 Emanuel Buchmann und Patrick Konrad. But the pace from Sky at the last climb of this Tour de France was so enormous high that Emu and Koni lost five kilometers before the KOM the contact to the group. Nibali closes the gap 3k before last pass. A few moments later also Izaguirre Insausti (Movistar) was able to close the gap to the leaders. He attacked in the downhill und won the stage ahead of Pantano and Nibali. In the GC there was no change, so Chris Froome will ride tomorrow as the leader with the yellow jersey to Paris.
Emanuel Buchmann could show today a solid performance on the mountains, stayed long in the group with all favorites and finished on the 34th place with a gap of +9’10’’. Bartosz Huzarski crossed the line today together with Emu in 35th place. Very pleasant for the team, that Emanuel moved up to 3rd place in the general classification of the young riders.

“Today it was again a really hard day from the start. I had extremely bad legs and so it was a torture all over the day. On the penultimate climb I couldn’t hold the group with the favorites, but in the downhill Bartosz helped me to get back into the group. From the bottom of the last climb I rode my one speed together with Bartosz. He was the whole day on my side and supported me. In the GC I’m now on the 21th place, which is for me still ok. Of course, the 20th place was my goal, but I hadn’t the necessary luck to go in the right group. The situation this year was new for me, because in the last year I didn’t have this pressure. Nobody cared if I lost a few minutes. This year I had to be fully focused on every single stage.” – Emanuel Buchmann
