Wetter/Ruhr (Germany) – July 26th, 2018. Yesterday's 17th stage of the Tour de France is one for the history books for ABUS. With his stage win in the Pyrénées, Nairo Quintana of the Movistar Team scored the first victory of an ABUS helmet at
the world's most important cycling race. But that's not all: it marked also the very first in-race-use for the ABUS AirBreaker, proving the innovative design and extraordinary performance of the new top model.

In complex development work together with the riders of the Movistar Team

ABUS created a high-end road helmet that simultaneously offers outstanding ventilation, very good aerodynamics, and minimum weight. The theme of the ABUS AirBreaker is already in its name: The helmet is designed for ventilation and aerodynamics. The foundation was provided by the successful design of the ABUS GameChanger – the aero-helmet that started a revolution in road bike helmets last year. After months of common development, the long-awaited ABUS AirBreaker was presented to the riders of the Movistar Team on the second rest day of the Tour de France. On the demanding stage over three Pyrenees climbs, the AirBreaker was used for the first time by the Movistar riders in the high mountains. Under these conditions, the innovative racing helmet, which is designed for outstanding ventilation, was able to fully exploit its qualities. At low speeds on the climbs, the honeycomb structure of the upper part of the helmet dissipates heat – at higher speeds in the descents, it stabilizes the aerodynamics and ensures constant internal airflow. Furthermore, seven extra-deep air channels provide perfect cooling.
The special form of their surface shades the skin of the head, despite the long-stretched openings.

With the success, the Movistar Team has again taken the lead in the team classification

The riders around Nairo Quintana, Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde are once again on the road wearing their ABUS helmets in yellow design, specially made for the Tour de France.

“Victories are always sweet, but this success of Nairo Quintana is a cherry on the cake. Like the Movistar Team, the entire ABUS family is excited about this very special day in our partnership. Because it underlines the mutual trust in the common success. We really appreciate that the riders change to a new helmet during the Tour. Since they were assistant in its development, there was great anticipation. First race and a solo victory in the biggest race in the world – you cannot present the qualities of the ABUS AirBreaker more convincingly.”

Nairo Quintana after winning the 17th stage of the Tour de France:

“The team was perfect today. This win gives me massive confidence for the remainder of the Tour de France. We must continue fighting and attacking – we know the GC win will be extremely hard. I thank God for protecting us and giving us hope and strength.”

At a weight of barely 200 grams (size S), the AirBreaker  sets a new standard for high-end road bike helmets

The low weight is made possible by the ActiCage Lite, which was developed by ABUS. This is an innovative cage architecture that has enabled ABUS developers to integrate large air openings into the AirBreaker – without any compromises in safety. After its premiere at the Eurobike, the riders of the Movistar Team are exclusively equipped with the ABUS AirBreaker. Starting in January 2019, the ABUS AirBreaker will be available in selected bicycle shops. The new ABUS top model is
offered in eight color variations and in three sizes.
