More and more couples are using padlocks as a declaration of love. The lock is hung on a bridge and the key thrown into the water to symbolise an everlasting relationship. Originally from Italy, this wonderful custom has developed into a widespread tradition.

How did this romantic tradition begin?

The origin of love locks has little to do with love. Back in the 1950s and 60s, Italian soldiers would mark the end of their military service by attaching their locker padlocks to the railings of bridges.

Ponte Vecchi or Ponte Milvio – love locks are attached to bridges all over the world

In the 1990s, this practice was taken up by Italian sweethearts, with bridge railings and lamp posts throughout the country amassing collections of love locks – well-known examples include the Ponte Vecchio in Florence or the Ponte Milvio in Rome. From there, these so-called “amorchetti” have grown into a beautiful, widespread tradition.

Love lock bridges around the world: New York, London, Cologne

With an estimated 200,000 love locks, the Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne is among the most popular in Germany. Love locks can now even be found on the Great Wall of China, on the Pont des Arts in Paris, the Kampa Bridge in Prague and the Lushkow Bridge in Moscow. The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City is also among the most popular bridges for lovers. Needless to say that London would be incomplete without such a place. Here, the Millennium Bridge over the River Thames is considered to be the city’s love lock bridge.
