Anthony Lewellen – Chicago
Anthony Lewellen (@Antckone), is a born and raised Chicago artist. In his youth he discovered skateboarding and the freedom of exploring the city on four wheels. Skateboarding exposed him to the graffiti culture of Chicago, influencing his early work. He made a name for himself early on with his street art and continued his formal education graduating from the American Academy of Art with a degree in graphic design.
Street art and commissioned work
The streets of Chicago are now adorned with a steadily growing number of large, public murals by Anthony Lewellen. His work goes beyond street art, Anthony is also productive in his studio and has devoted himself to numerous, privately commissioned works. He works a lot with spray paint, but also frequently uses acrylic paint and ink. Latex paint is also used in murals, as Lewellen continues to experiment. The love of drawing, which he already felt as a child, has always developed over the years to create his own defined style.
Impressions of the city become a work of art
Whether a building wall, wood, paper or canvas - Lewellen manages to breathe life into all these mediums. Even in his early days, the artist's works were characterized by bold colors and emotionally complex characters, inspired by his direct observations of his surroundings. His works reflect his impressions of life in the city - impressions he absorbed on the road skateboarding and riding bikes.
With his personal visual vocabulary, he creates dynamic art. The elements of visual language he uses show the city where he himself lives and works - Chicago. The artworks created by Anthony Lewellen seem like sequences of images that have sprung from a story. In this way, he succeeds in making the cityscape seem even more alive with his murals.
The style of his murals is reflected on the ABUS Scraper helmet he designed. He has projected the impressions of his city on the helmet to design a real Chicago helmet.
