It was a success story from the very beginning: The team, which has been in the same boat since 2016, won the German championship in the 470 class after only half a year of working together! The Augsburg native and the Deggenhausertal native had their sights firmly set on participating in the 2020 Olympic Games. At the qualifying regattas in spring, the sailors wanted to punch their ticket to Tokyo, but the Corona pandemic threw a spanner in the works. The European and World Championships were also cancelled. A difficult time for the ambitious athletes: Since the World Cup in Miami at the end of January 2020, they had not sailed a 470 regatta, nor were the 470s present at the "Kieler Woche". "We'll keep at it, look for our opportunities and do our best to make the dream of the Olympics come true next year," Simon Diesch and Philipp Autenrieth said optimistically in the summer.

There has been light on the horizon since October: The successful crew left for a training camp in Santander on the Spanish Atlantic coast. At the beginning of November, the training group will move to the stormy Canary Island of Lanzarote. "We are now happy to have the planning in our own hands again for a longer period of time. At least that's what we hope," the two say. On 5 March 2021, the World Championships are scheduled to start in Vilamoura/Portugal - then finally the first Olympic elimination. Simon Diesch: "From now on we have a goal and that's what we're working towards!"
